Open to change.
I listened to a Ram Dass story where he talked about buying all of his spiritual stuff. Not just junk, but books, malas, letters from India. The precious stuff that I would hold onto forever. He talked about how the things that had helped him grow had become attachments. So he let them go in a blaze. Not because they were bad, but because he knew it was time to make space for something new.
I’m not saying you should go toss out your stuff. Honestly I’m not even trying to tell you what to do. I am just bringing up an idea and this story hits on something real. We’re always changing. Sometimes faster than we realize. And it can take a while for our self-image to catch up with who we’ve already become.
It’s easy to forget we got here because of everything that came before us. Not just our parents or grandparents, but all of life. The whole thing. Every cell in our body carries that history. That intelligence. Evolution or change, isn’t just a theory, it’s a process happening now.
Which means the ability to adapt and grow is built into us. But so are the stories. The ones we picked up from childhood, culture, school, old relationships. Some of them helped us get through things. Others made us feel safe. But not all of them still fit. And if we’re not paying attention, we keep living by them without even realizing it.
That includes the stuff we take in every day. News, media, social feeds. It might seem harmless, but it quietly sets the tone for what we believe is possible, how we see the world, what we expect from ourselves and others. It’s worth noticing what we’re feeding our minds. Not because we need to avoid it all, but because the inputs shape the output. Every seed brings forth after its kind.
So this isn’t about cutting things off. It’s just an invitation to notice. To pause. To give ourselves the chance to see where we’re responding from. And to ask whether that’s still true for us now.
Because you’re not your stories. You’re not even your thoughts. You’re the force that moves through all of it. The same creative energy that turned dust into stars, and stars into earth, and earth into you. Whether you call it life, nature, spirit, or nothing at all, you are that movement.
When you remember that, even for a moment, something inside relaxes. Some call it peace.
