Trust your gut

There is a moment when a bird knows it's time to fly south. No map. No committee. No second-guessing the decision for three weeks. Something internal signals that it's time, and the bird goes. Whatever that knowing is, it doesn't have to be explained or justified. It just has to be followed.

We have something like that too. Most of us have just been taught to distrust it.

The body is not a passive system waiting to be managed from the outside. It is an intelligent, self-organizing process that is constantly generating information about what it needs. Hunger, fatigue, tension, ease, that quiet pull toward something or away from something, these are not noise. They are signal. The body is always communicating. The question is whether we're listening.

Learning to listen is not as simple as it sounds. Most of us have spent years overriding the signal. We push through exhaustion because the schedule demands it. We eat what's convenient rather than what the body is actually asking for. We stay in situations that create chronic tension and call it normal. We outsource the authority for our own health to systems and experts and second opinions, which have their place, but cannot substitute for the knowledge that lives inside you about your own experience.

This is what I mean when I talk about innate intelligence. Not something mystical, though it can feel that way when you first start paying attention to it. Something practical. The same organizing force that regulates your body temperature, coordinates your immune response, and heals a cut without any conscious instruction from you, that same intelligence has an orientation toward health. It is always moving in that direction. The work is not to create that movement. The work is to stop interfering with it.

That requires trust. And trust, in this context, is not blind. It is built through practice. You start small. You notice what happens when you actually rest instead of pushing through. You notice how food affects your mood and your energy, not as a theory but as a lived observation. You notice the difference between tension that has meaning and tension that is just accumulated stress looking for somewhere to go. You pay attention, over and over, until the signal gets clearer.

The clarity doesn't arrive all at once. It builds. The more you listen, the more there is to hear. The more you act on what you hear, the more you trust the source. That trust is not a personality trait you either have or don't. It's a capacity that develops the same way any other capacity does: through use.

Health is not something that happens to you when you finally figure out the right protocol. It's something you learn to participate in, from the inside out, one honest choice at a time.

The bird doesn't wait until it understands migration theory. It just goes when it knows.
